FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions about TIS Who owns the school? - The school is owned by OkTedi Mining Ltd (OTML). How is the school managed? - The school is managed by The International Education Agency of Papua New Guinea (IEA) under an agreement with OTML. Who is the school for? - Whilst the school is primarily provided for employees of OTML. Other Tabubil residents are welcome to enroll their children provided there is space in the relevant class. What is the curriculum that you use? - The IEA has developed its own internationally compatible curriculum based on recent curricula used in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Papua New Guinea. See our curriculum page What ages can children start at the school? - Usually from five years old in the Primary School - children need to be five by the 31st March to start Prep that year. Children can join the Early Years programme from 2 years of age. see our enrolment information What Grade does the school go to? - Most children stay until Grade 6 but some remain to complete Grade 7 at TIS before moving to Secondary education. What is the Grade structure? - Our first Grade in the Primary School is Prep followed by Grade 1 up to Grade 7. The structure is in line with many Australian states including NSW and Victoria. The Grade numbers are simply a reference system and may be different to that from other school systems. How are children allocated the correct Grade? - Through a combination of age and previous schooling experience we aim to find the correct class for your child. see our enrolment information Won't my child suffer from being in different Grade to their current school? - This is an often asked question and in all honesty in our experience the answer is categorically no. This is often a much greater concern for parents than it is for students. What are the school fees? - These are set each year and can be paid annually or termly. see our current fees. What is the school uniform? - We have a uniform which can be purchased from the school. see our uniform details What books will my child need to bring? - It is not necessary to bring any specific books as we provide all educational materials. Children often like to have their own pencils, pens and crayons at school. Some home reference books would be helpful such as a dictionary.
